Interleague Day Saturday
Once again Interleague day approaches and once again not a friggin thing in my email from any league including interleague itself supporting ,suggesting , promoting or even taking a dump on the idea of getting players to come out. I wrote United admins a few weeks ago when they were supposed to host and the replies i finally got were just whiny bullshit about there being other games out there and our players have diversified yada yada my aching ass. I know the people who read my rantings play and some of you are in a position to reach out to a broader base of people thru league newsletters. Give it a shot... we should be having 10- 30 person tourneys or even larger, not cancelling tourneys. Im gonna keep bitching about this until i turn blue in the face so look for another post sunday .

Hey perrin, I agree that Interleague should be advertised more. When it first started I got a spate of e-mails about it, but I haven't seen anything in quite a while. (I am in only one other Wordox league, Synergy -- that, Interleague, and a doublecross league are enough for me -- but from what I've read in your blog, it seems that none of the leagues are doing much to promote Interleague.) I would love to play in some big tourneys; Interleague offers the potential for just that, but it is not living up to its potential. Other things that would get me personally to play in Interleague more often: [1] fewer "gimmick" tourneys (stick to straight ox and no pinks), [2] a "normal" league page that doesn't tie up my old slow PC quite so bad as the current one, and [3] fall (Saturdays from Memorial Day thru Labor Day are for the pool, LOL).
I agree about the addying for Interleague, I try by mentioning it in league rooms but it really does need to be in newsletters or something from all leagues. Hold my hand up to running gimmicky tournies but there are plenty of straight ox ones for the more serious players. I get players that do not play in straight tournies and as Interleague is for everyone then straight and gimmicky brings in more players hopefully. Got to have fun too!!
I, too, definitely agree to the fact that Interleague needs some "talking up" power. I, like Mum, talk about it during Saturday morning tourneys or Friday night tourneys, but it needs either a newsletter of its own or put in all the leagues' newsletters. Or both, for that matter.
But, I beg to differ with your point that there are to be less "gimmick" tourneys, Cleo. In fact, I object to the word "gimmick" when describing such a tourney. A creative and different approach to Wordox, to me, is both refreshing and intriguing. I know I really get tired of the same old "plain ox" or "no pinks" tourneys over and over and over again.
In addition, some players that I know of enjoy variety tourneys, and take time out of their day to come and play them when they see them. Excluding these tourneys would, thusly, exclude or severely discourage these players from coming to play at Interleague. I, for one, am not going to quit making these so-called "gimmick" tourneys; I find that change is fun and it's challenging to play in them. (I know your point was not to do away with them altogether, Cleo. I just felt I had to stand up for them.)
Finally, and this is not an attack on you, Perrin, or any one person in particular: Why not play in these tourneys? I'm at a loss for a reason why. As Perrin says here, "To be the Man ya gotta beat the Man!" If you can only win at straight ox and no pinks, then you're not a real champion. Being able to win in any format shows true prowess. A willingness to play in any tourney, no matter the format, shows the true heart of a champion: graceful when he loses, grateful when he wins. If you can't conquer something such as two tile or no oranges, then you really aren't "the Man" (or Woman), now are you?
Sorry about the long rant, but I felt the point had to be made. Glurkers to everyone today at Interleague. ; O )
Very nice comments, mummykins and shadowy_niddyz.
I just want to point out that the suggestions I made at the end of my first comment are ones that would make Interleague (and Wordox in general) more palatable for me personally, not necessarily anyone else. I know that lots of people like to play formats other than straight ox and no pinks (and mummykins, I don't think this makes them any less "serious" than people who don't; if anything, it makes them more "open-minded" and that is a good thing :)).
My biggest problem with Wordox in general is that it seems skewed more towards LUCK than SKILL. When a game uses less than 25% of the total # of tiles available*, so much rides on the luck of the draw -- getting just the right tile at just the right time. And some, although not all, of what I call "gimmick" tourneys can exploit this.
*This is based on the facts that there are 442 total tiles available per game of Wordox -- DorcasA and Nanc814 actually counted one day! -- and that it takes no more than 99 tiles for one player to win a game with a score of 45 or fewer points, not counting passes.
Sheesh, I wish you could edit comments... I meant 89 tiles, not 99. At any rate, it's less than 25% of the total.
LOL Cleo, I used serious cos couldnt think of a nicer way to put it!! I did realise it was your personal opinion about the tournies, I think all of us have one thing in common, we all want Interleague to be a success and bring in more players, sure between us we can move mountains!!
