I Get It
I finally understand why people at wordsteal hate ringers. You work hard , build up a respectable rating, play anyone who wants a game (i do anyway) and along comes some asshole with a new name and in this game skilled or not you cant win every game so you take a beating on that hard earned rating to someone who has a name with a respectable rating already. Why these people cant stick with one or 2 names is a question unanswerable. I will continue to play the ringers, assholes that they are but like i said i do understand the hatred and continuing rejections for games by established players when one of these jerks comes along.

Because of the sparse turnout in Hoyle leagues the past month, with ExtremeOx being the only league that has a full slate of tourneys every night, I decided to try playing in Wordsteal about three weeks ago. The Wordsteal room has a good crowd 24/7 and you can always find a game there. But Wordsteal league is a weird place to play, predominately consisting of egotists and pussies who are obsessed with their (high) rating number and won't play anyone they might lose to. The sad truth is that ALL RATINGS in Wordsteal are grossly overinflated-- you see the highest ratings of 2500 and above in Wordsteal as compared to the highest ratings in Hoyle being 2000+. I watched many of the higher rated players in Wordsteal play and played many of them myself and most of them aren't anywhere as good as their rating might indicate. Many of the players rated 2000-2400 in Wordsteal are mediocre players who have/had ratings of only 1600-1700 in Hoyle. But due to the improperly skewed and invalid rating system of Wordsteal these mediocre players now see a high number next to their name and actually believe they're great players. Perrin and I have discussed the flaws of the Wordsteal rating system and the problems with the players-- he's posted several commentaries on the subject. He has his pet peeves and I have mine. One thing that irks me about Wordsteal is the players who attain a certain rating number (usually over 2000) and then proceed to play ONLY people rated 400-500 points lower than themselves to protect their precious rating (mainly or only in multi-player games). That way they're almost guaranteed a win every time and are not at risk to lose rating points. There's nothing wrong with a 2400 rated player playing someone rated 1600-1700 to give the lower rated player a chance to play a top rate, but not ALL THE TIME to the exclusion of playing people with a higher skill level. I've seen players sit at a table with the same player (a much weaker player, usually several hundred rating points lower than them) for hours, beating them game after game, picking up only one rating point at a time, rather than play someone closer to their rating (or, god forbid, someone actually higher rated than them) who might really give them a good game. How challenging can it be for someone rated 2200 to continuously play people rated 1600 just to gain one rating point at a time and so they can add to their win streak? It's rather sad. But that's just one of the things you have to deal with in Wordsteal.
I agree with you on all points and its sad to see the leagues slide like they have. Being out of the loop at hoyle im not sure what the reason for the decline is. I personally just wasnt having fun there anymore and i found an alternative i like.
Yeah, I can understand the hatred of ringers but some of the established players over there think they know everyone who enters the room! When I first went over there, I beat one of the high priestesses of Wordsteal and offended her majesty; she promptly ordained me a Ringer and would pm people and warn them off me. What a nice welcome!
(Didn't stop me from playing there, and now she has shut up, since I apparently have proven myself in her eyes. I have no intention of ever playing her in a game. Would hate to beat her again. ahhahhhaah)
